Hair loss or baldness afflicts a majority of both men and women all over the world. It can prove a big setback to your personality and looks, and may even cause psychological trauma. However, by effective hair loss remedies you can slow down the progress considerably, if not stop it altogether.
Understanding hair growth
Our hairs, especially on the head, which appear permanent, actually remain in continuous flux. Each has a cycle of growth, rest and falling off. About ninety percent of them are growing at any one time. In the growth stage, each hair grows approximately one centimeter per month, rests and falls off after two or three months. But, these fallen hairs get continuously replaced.
However, some of you may experience more than normal hair loss. This condition is not only confined to men, but can affect women and children too.
Causes of hair loss
There can be a number of diverse reasons for excessive hair loss. Some of them are:
a. Illness or surgery: An illness or a major surgery may make you shed a large amount of hair, due to stress, but only temporarily.
b. Infections: Certain fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss, but can be treated easily with antifungal medicines. Hair loss may also occur as a result of an underlying disease, like lupus or diabetes.
c. Hormonal imbalance: You may also lose hair due to some hormonal problems. For instance, it can be due to an overactive or under active thyroid gland. However, this condition can be reversed by treatment. Even an imbalance of male or female hormones, called androgens and estrogens, can bring about this condition. Hairs are restored by correcting this hormonal imbalance. In pregnant women, temporary hair loss can be experienced about three months after the baby is born due to hormonal changes.
d. Medicines: Some medicines can cause hair loss, but this loss can be reversed by stop taking the medicine. Some known medicines that cause hair loss are blood thinners or anticoagulants, medicines for gout, chemotherapy, overdose of vitamin A, birth control pills and antidepressants.
Natural remedy hair loss
There are some excellent natural home remedies for hair. Let’s see what they are:
a. Diet: A diet that gives strength to the hair is ideal to prevent hair loss. Whole foods, such as potatoes, cucumbers, green and red peppers and sprouts give strength because they’re rich in the mineral silica. Even foods high in iron, such as lean meats, prevent hair loss.
b. Saw palmetto oil: Saw palmetto oil prevents hair loss that results from illness or disease.
c. Aromatherapy: Mixessential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood with grape seed and jojoba oils. Massage gently into scalp for three to five minutes.
d. Ayurveda: Bhringaraj or brahmi oil, an Ayurvedic product, if applied regularly to the scalp stimulates hair growth. Ayurvedic herbs, like ashwagandha and amla are also known to give lush growth.
e. Traditional Chinese medicine: In traditional Chinese medicine, hair loss is linked to kidney deficiency syndrome. Those with early or accelerated hair loss may have particularly weak kidney energy. Kidney tonics are usually recommended for hair restoration.
If adequate treatment is not available for your type of hair loss, you may consider trying different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement.
